1. Unemployment Rate Falls to 8.6 Percent
The unemployment rate fell to 8.6 percent in November, a number that offers the Obama administration a rare piece of good economic news, but also masks a startling shift in the job market. The Labor Department said Friday that employers added 120,000 jobs last month. With that, the unemployment rate dropped to the lowest level in more than two and a half years. But a key reason for the sharp drop was that about 315,000 people had stopped looking for work
2. Al Qaeda Claims to Be Holding U.S. Hostage in Pakistan
Al Qaeda claimed responsibility Thursday for the kidnapping of a 70-year-old American aid worker in Pakistan, a claim that one U.S. official tells Fox News is "entirely possible," though it has not been confirmed.
3. FDA Examines Level of Arsenic in Apple Juice
The FDA is considering tightening restrictions for the levels of arsenic allowed in apple juice after consumer groups pushed the agency to crack down on the contaminant. Arsenic is naturally present in water, air, food and soil in the two forms - organic and inorganic. According to the FDA, organic arsenic passes through the body quickly and is essentially harmless. Inorganic arsenic - the type found in pesticides - can be toxic and may pose a cancer risk if consumed at high levels or over a long period.
