The nation's unemployment rate fell to its lowest level in nearly three years at the end of 2011, as a burst of private-sector hiring helped sustain what has been a positive trend lately in the job market.The rate, which dipped to 8.5 percent in December, has dropped for four straight months.

Homeless people in southern California were put on alert by police and advocates concerned that they're the target of a serial killer who has already slain three men.The Orange County Rescue Mission handed out flashlights and whistles in an effort to help homeless people protect themselves after three men were stabbed to death in north Orange County.
3. Pope Benedict XVI Names 22 New Cardinals
 Pope Benedict XVI named 22 new cardinals, announcing on Friday he will elevate them in a formal ceremony Feb. 18.They include prelates from New York, Hong Kong, Berlin, Prague, Toronto and Florence, Italy, and some key Vatican offices.Of the 22, 18 are under 80, raising to 125 the numbers of cardinals eligible to vote in a papal conclave
